I finally got out and ran with trepedation due to pulling my right hamstring.  I've ben babying it for a week now and it seemed to be getting better, well not all the way better, so I'm sort of pushing it little fast but it wasn't to bad.  I'll take some Advil and do some streaching. Sammy the snow dog had fun though and it was sunny and bright with all the new snow so what the hay.

Finally got out to run after work, ran south on the parkway with the snow dog. Still pretty cold the trail was trecherous in many places wish it would warm up enough to melt some.

I'm thinking it may be my fault the snow is not melting. I have a darling snowman picture hanging on the front of my house that says, "Star light, star bright, please don't let me melt tonight." I got it last year and the winter was terrible cold. Maybe I ought to not have this up anymore.

First all the good things about my run;  it was a pretty nice sunny day, it was my day off work, I had all day to run and work out in our gym down stairs. Now the bad things; my asma was  bad today, Sammy was slow and stuburn, my hamstring problem was worse and streaching didn't help., I had no energy and felt like giving up. That being said I made it to five miles and I'm glad I did it.

It's easy to find the hard and bad things about a run, but way to find the good things too! It's hard to run when you have to keep motivating the snow dog!

From Brent on Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 20:11:47

Sylvie, you will get back with it, slow and easy in this cold weather, don't take a chance on pulling the hammy more.

The snow dog has been the slow dog lately. She only wants to run fast when we have 6 inches of snow to run in.

It was nice to run today after this weekend playing with kiddie toys.

Three mile out-and-back south on parkway with my pack (Brent, Sammy, and me). Then a five mile out-and-back north, the trail was happily in pretty good shape we even ran on the dirt trail. The worse part was running into the wind, it was fearse, cold, and difficult to breath with my asthma, making it feel twice as far.

Waited and waited for the snow to stop when it finally did, it was almost to my knees! Sammy the snow dog was ready to go so I decided I was ready too, man what a hard run the parkway was NOT cleared makeing it feel twice as far.

Poor Snow Dog developed high heel ice paws with snowman packed legs she could hardly walk, let a lone run. I had to pick out her feet and legs a coulple of times. Hope the race Saturday isn't like this.

I put 3.1 fast miles which is reletive to the pain in my hamstring, sometimes running the best you can is fast under the conditions. Brent has told all the fun things about the race; the people from the blog, old running freinds, and the (party) after the race.  All were good times.

Now with the first race of the year under my running shoes I will heal my injuries and train harder to be up to speed with my lovey hubby.

We ran south on the Murray Parkway a mile and a half, beautiful day! Comming back a majestic bald egale flew right over our heads  I turned around to follow  it flying south along the river it was a beaultiful sight. We droped the snow dog off and then ran north two miles, there were many patches of ice and we had to hop scotch a lot. On our return trip the wind picked up and it was a lot harder to hop scotch and run.

I want spring now not in six weeks!

Brent and me ran a mile and a little to warm up. The start went off without a hitch, I felt pretty good the first mile 8:15 pace. In the second mile I began to feel the pain in my hamstring begin, by mile five I could't reach a full stride without pain. So I had to slow down to a bearible speed.

Why did they have to start the race at 8 am? It was very cold and far from home this morning. Because I knew it was really cold I took my mask for my asthma and I was glad I did. The course was mostly dry but at most corners and intersections there was a snow-ice combo, so hop scotch was the order of the day. The hills were the big obsticale for my hamstring and breathing, too bad there was more up hill than down hill.

Mostly I feel it was a wake up call for how much I need to do more hill training!

Good job Sylvie! I think we all could use more hill training. Hope the asthma and hamstring issues diminish over the next while.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 15:34:48

I wonder how much your ability to run hills comes from the actual hill training, and how much just from properly replenishing carbs and getting good sleep. On a good day when I feel snappy I run well overall and barely notice hills. On a bad day, the hills bother me, I slow down relative to the already slow pace more. At the end of a marathon the first sign of trouble for me (and I noticed for the competition as well) is excessive slow down on the uphill.

From Tom on Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 18:55:08

Sasha your comment reminded me that although in my training runs the hills have seemed more troublesome than they should be, during the Painters 1/2 they didn't bother me at all, like you said I barely noticed them. I heard people complaining about all these hills the last 1/2 of the race and I'm thinking "what hills?".

Probably good to remember the importance of good diet and sleep and perhaps even a bit of taper before the hilly races.

From Cody on Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 21:33:55

Hey Sylvie, I'll put the same comment on your blog I put on Brent's, how about putting up your PR's for your shorter races on the left so that we can see how this race compares to other 5k and 10k times you have done.

I hear you on the 8am start time. In the winter there is no need for a race to start earlier than 9:30 in my opinion.

From Jon on Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 21:59:33

Nice job- are you guys doing the whole training series?

From Sylvie on Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 21:25:08

Thank you all for the good comments and sugestions. I just feel lucky to run without more problems at my age, one of the most limiting problems is my asthma between the cold and the hills my lungs shut down about 25 percent it feels alot like bronchitis. I use two inhailers one long acting and one short acting but both failed to work 100 percent Saturday.

What I plan to do for the rest of these winter series runs is use them as tempo training runs. So I'm not going to worry so much about times, as long as I feel like it was a good hard workout.

I'm finally feeling a little better so I'll say a little more about my run (I'm tired of only complaining and making excuses). It was so... nice out side, birds making their return appearance to the parkway. It really felt like spring so I ran with no jacket and got a little cold, oh well it was worth it.

Three with Sammy then droped her of and ran my east loop up Bullion hill as fast as I could push, like my 5K pace then ran a little slower to recover. Then pushed again down Green Oaks finally on the Parkway another push to our driveway.

This is a commando course, in fact Special Forces could train on this course.  I was NOT happy with my time but was happy with my effort. I attacked all the hills with as much as I could but because of my asthma I would walk a bit to regain my breathing.

Hopfully this work out will help me in the Canyonlands race next Saturday.

Brent and I had a couples deep tissue massage this afternoon and I think it really helped.

Good luck defending your title! Can't wait to hear the report! There are lots of us who are a bit jealous that we didn't get in for Moab! However, in Tom and my case, we would have had to cancel because of his dad's funeral the same day. So I guess it was a blessing we didn't get in.

So I ran pretty good for being injured I feel like I'll never run injury free (big sigh). Before the race Brent and I walked up the trail behind the porta poties boy they smell. When we met up with Bethany and Paul it was so fun to meet buddies from blog they are really nice. Then Brent had to go.. and there was big long lines at porta poties so we ran up towards the start to one lone potie with no line. Then we waited a while for the start it was nice to have Brent to talk to usually he runs the half.

First mile ran good, felt relativly pain free and kept Brent in sight which means I'm doing ok for me. About 7:50 pace.

Second mile the hill did in my breathing which was the bigest problem for me this time. Pace 8:30.

Third mile I had to walk awile to use my quick acting inhaler (you have to hold your breath for 10 seconds, if I'm breathing hard I can't hold my breath that long). I didn't look at my watch again so I don't know my pace.

Forth mile my breathing was a little better tried to pick it up. So glad to turn that corner and see the water stop. Took a cup then since I could catch my breath I used my inhaler again, I wonder if some sort of pollen was out down there to cause my bad asthma.

Finally I saw the finish and also saw Brent I was so happy to see both!

I want to thank the bloggers for their great comments on the Canyonlands race. I haven't run hardly at all since then because of sciatica, my right leg problems (hamstring, knee, and achillis) turned into sciatica I couldn't hardly sit all the way home from Moab. What a day for a day dream, sweet run. Are you ready for saturday?

I wish I could take my dog on a parkway like that with other dogs. My dog would go bonkers around them all! My dog is naughty though, most dogs go for walks and behave themselves!

Sorry your running buddy can't join you on your parkway. I'm sure you miss him just as much as he misses you and being out there. You two hang in there!

Ran two and a half miles north on the parkway. What a crazy weather day sun, wind, snow, and that was repeated many times. Its so nice to have the wildlife back despite the cold spring. Redwing Blackbirds have a interesting call that always makes me feel like its finally spring.

Over all I pushed the hills and pick it up hopeing for a good race Saturday.

Is this May or March? Cold South wind and two short rather steep hills but other than that it was a good race. I don't know my splits because the miles weren't marked but I think pushing up hills on my runs have helped. A cute plaque for top three in each age division.

way to run Sylvie. Alex was there and ran the 2K. Yes there was a cold wind that morning. Hope you shared some girl scout cookies with Brent

Ran south on the parkway with Sammy one mile then I had to make a conference call for my work. Then I ran north on the parkway two miles saw a big garden snake sun bathing across the path so I chased it toward the river so it wouldn't get run over by a biker.

Came back and waited for my freind Sally to get home from work to run three more miles. We are going to run the Race For The Cure saturday, Its her very first race. She did really well tonight and I think we will propably be able to run 8:30 pace.

Maybe you should start a nine mile race in memory of your run and call it "Save the Snakes 9 mile run". (nine miles because that is your total you ran). I think I would have let the snake chase me toward the river! I hate snakes! You are such a nice person to have the desire to save it!

Brent, nice ramblings up there! Is there a tune to it? It's good you have a fun and creative mind during recovery! Hope you are both doing well. And good luck on the race for the cure! Tell your friend, Sally, that she has cheers from the bloggers coming her way!

From Sylvie on Fri, May 09, 2008 at 14:52:28

One mile south with Sammy nice day just the right temp. for running! Then ran two miles north on the parkway. Running back on the dirt trail a big dog on a long leash ran up to me and hit me hard with its nose the owner was indifferent and said oh she just wanted to smell you. I just don't like being touched by strange dogs and gave her a look but she just walked on. I wish dog owners would control their dogs!

It was my friend Sally's first race so it was her first pr, she was really happy it was the best she had run so far (only two months).

Had to wait for flooring installer to come and of course he was a few hours late. Took off about 1:45pm, ran north on the parkway wasn't paying attention and ran past the three and a have point. Then I realized I had a conference call at 3 o'clock yicks I had to move out fast! I hardly stoped to get a drink. Well I did get back at 3:07 and broke  into the conference call, my superviser didn't sound pleased but I did get a little speed workout.:)

Since achellis still felt pretty serious I decided to switch to the 5K and so did Brent. So we jogged walked to the start. The wind was really blowing and the tempture felt chilly, just right for a race.

First mile pace was 7:40, heal was hurting already.

Second mile pace was 8:20

Third mile pace 8:30

Tenth 1 min.

I don't think I did more damage to my heal hopefully.

Later I see the red eared turtle, I tried to take a picture of it. I bought a Bean Camera thats made to take hikeing and such.

I'm Glad to have that race done, it was a real foot and quad slapper!

The first two miles were flat or a little up hill. Then look out! major down hill for four miles. At five miles my watch was 39:50. after the six mile mark it all caught up to me! I had to stop a couple of times (maybe more than a couple) to use my inhaler. The air was crisp but smokey and the altitue being almost 8,ooo feet, my asthma was a little worse than usual.

But all in all it was a smokin first half and a hang on to the end second half. With beautiful senery and a good breakfast in the park after.
